M. Gorbachev
spoke in Santa Fe in April. He called for a new global glasnost, and radical reforms to meet the challenges of the 21st century. 'History is not pre-ordained', he said (by way of encouragement). Here is an excellent overview of his speech from Cheryl Rofer on TechnoRati, and here is Stephen Fox's blog on the subject.
Willem Malten

Ecoversity: Presentations, Workshops and Courses
Below you'll find listings of presentations and workshops you may follow online or attend in person at Ecoversity in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
Jay Bonner: Geometric Design in Decoration and Architecture
Using visual material from the historic record, a brief introduction to the broader historical and aesthetic aspects of geometric art will be given. Following this, the lecture will detail the traditional construction methods used to create Islamic geometric patterns. To this end, attention will be focused upon three specific examples of outstanding geometric design. These three examples will be of variable complexity, and each will be recreated from scratch using the Polygonal Technique.
At the conclusion of this lecture attendees will have an understanding of the basic methodology employed historically in this design tradition. For those interested, this knowledge can be immediately applied to ones own artistic endeavors. (read more about Jay Bonner)
Michael Baron: Principles of Proportional Geometry
Michael Baron investigates geometric ideas and their intrinsic governing principles that are found to underlie the natural world.
Over the years he has offered geometry programs to elementary school children, teachers of mathematics, and scientists of the Los Alamos National Laboratories.
His overarching goal is to see that these timeless shape grammars become available to children around the world. As teaching aids, they help reinforce the young maker who is in turn made whole through their efforts of constructing these timeless universal forms. (read more about Michael Baron)
Michael will also give a seminar on AerBlock (Autoclaved Aerated Concrete), a revolutionary building material which can be easily shaped, provides excellent insulation, and is extremely lightweight.

Saturday April 26th: Special Earth-Day Event at Ecoversity
Fuel and Food From Algae: a Practical Demonstration
Alfonz Viszolay and his crew of enterprising and brilliant kids (Leonardo and Alexandria of LG International, pictured above) will present a biofuel-producing living algae machine at Ecoversity on Saturday April 26 for Earthday. They will introduce us to the principles and techniques of algae farming for carbon sequestration and the production of biofuel, oils, and protein cakes. Taste and touch a hopeful and positive future of decentralized, abundant energy!
For students of environmental engineering and alternative energy sourcing, this is a must-see event. In ecoversity's classroom we will display and demonstrate a working model of the Algae Machine with illuminating explanations given by Alfonz's crew . Outside we will have a much larger prototype living algae machine with the algae growing in long plastic tubes, a technology invented and developed by Mr. Viszolay, a Hungarian-born engineer and inventor, who has done many environmental remediation projects for large corporations.
Ecoversity feels honored to host Mr. Viszolay and his young crew and such an important experiment in clean and decentralized energy production, and we invite everyone to participate in this important transmission of information and knowledge.
